Guangzhou -- Pearl River

Our first evening in Guangzhou (Canton) we took a 2 hour boat cruise on the Pearl River. The buildings and bridges decorated with lights were pleasant, and the boat itself was quite interesting. It was a refitted early 20th century cargo sailing ship, with a mast that was raised and lowered by a hydraulic device. There was a quite interesting small museum on board, "Maritime Silk Road Museum". Guangzhou was historically an important maritime trade port during some of the dynasties, while in other dynasties the emporer forbade trade with foreigners.
