NORWAY 2024 -- GORDON, CAROL EDWARDS, SUSAN WILEY, AND PAT BOND
At home before the trip, I learned to take night sky photos with my Nikon Z5 and newly purchased Viltrox 13 mm f1.4 lens. As it turned out, this was not necessary. My Pixel 7a phone camera set to "Night Sight" took excellent still photos of the aurora, and Carol took excellent videos with her Pixel 7 Pro .
DINNER at SNOW HOTEL, interrupted by ***AURORA BOREALIS DISPLAY*** JANUARY 4
We had a gourmet 3 course dinner at The Snow Hotel, near Kirkennes, Norway. The appetizer was Arctic Char Carpaccio, the entree was Reindeer steak with mushroom sauce, roasted potatoes, creamy horseradish sauce, cauliflower, and lingonberries, and the dessert was custard with cloudberries and a crispy cookie.
After the appetizer, a restaurant staff person announced "There are northern lights". Carol and I joined all the other diners dashing outside to look.
It was amazing!
Each of these pictures was a 2-3 second exposure. This sequence took place over about 3 minutes. The phone did good image stabilization, as the cabins, trees, and stars came out sharply focused despite the long exposure.
Carol took these two videos:
The food was beautifully presented, but did not compete with the aurora display.
