Munich --Nymphenburg Palace, Residenz
Nymphenburg Palace, the summer palace of the Bavarian royalty
The Residenz, in central Munich, the main palace of the Bavarian Royalty
This was the only palace on this trip where photography was allowed inside. The tour was self-guided, with an audio guide. Opulence is the overriding theme. French furniture was strongly represented, along with Italian and Oriental decorative arts, including tapestries. Only a portion of the palace is open to the public.
Like much of Munich, the Residenz was heavily damaged during World War II. Many buildings were restored without the elaborate stone work of the original, with painted designs instead, as in this example.
