Baja California and San Diego 2019
We had three outings on open boats in Laguna Ojo de Liebre (eye of the hare). Gray whales from the coasts of North and South America congregate every spring to birth, and to mate. About 4000 whales were in the lagoon at peak, in late February. About 2800 remained when we visited. We had lots of close whale encounters! Most of the whales we saw were in pairs - a mother and a calf. You can identify the calves because they do not have any barnacles on their skin.
Sea Salt production operation -- This salt works, producing salt in evaporation flats, produces 34% of world salt production, mostly for road treatment. It is majority Japanese owned. Operations are maintained to minimize effects on whales.
