Delta Works Storm Surge Barrier

Rhine/Scheldt river delta, South Holland

This 3 km long structure was planned after disastrous floods in 1953. Construction was completed in the 1980s, to prevent flooding during storm surges. Normal tide flows are maintained. If a severe North Sea storm is approaching, the barrier panels can be lowered in one hour. It has been colmpletely effective for flood prevention so far.
